Remis Velisque was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1970. She was raised in Austin, Texas, and found formal training in fine art at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California before pursuing a degree in Linguistic Philosophy. She lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

The aesthetic of Asian art and the long history of linework behind it, from woodcuts to simple brush strokes, are apparent in her work. The idea of viewing the emotional battle going on behind a restrained front is an ongoing theme. It seems much more human than, and is a direct reaction to, the contemporary leaning toward spectacle or vacancy.
